Fashion Me Fabulous' Essential Summer Wardrobe

Shopbop's attempt to build the ultimate summer wardrobe was too laundry day casual and far too expensive, so we thought we'd make our own. Theirs was 16 pieces: 9 items of clothing, 2 shoes, 1 bag, and 5 accessories ringing up over $2,400. I followed the same item scheme, but only spent $909.23 (and that's not even trying to budget!). If nothing else, our wardrobe will better serve you for work, weddings, firefly catching, vacations, graduations, picnics, ice cream runs, fairs, firework displays, dates, twilight strolls, and barbecues.

Before anything else, our ideal summer wardrobe needs a simple dress that will work multiple places. It should be so versatile that we forget how to dress without it. For that purpose, we love J. Crew's fitted lilac sundress for $128.
Our core summer wardrobe is built on comfort. A silk shell (Banana Republic $69.50) for work and formal events and a non-tee tee (Nordstrom $38.90) for more casual affairs. A full cotton skirt (Victoria's Secret $49.50) or crisp white pants (Bluefly $79.99) has you covered from playful to serious business. To really be prepared for everything summer can throw at you, you need a trusty cardigan (Forever 21 $22.80).
To add variety to that basic wardrobe, buy an embellished top (Forever 21 $17.80) for layering; the detachable bib on this one is particularly useful. Switch out the bottoms with a print skirt (Gap $49.50) or comfortable pleated shorts Forever 21 $15.80).
You need a good pair of open toe pumps that can carry an outfit from event to event. We're loving this pinkish metallic huarache pump from Boutique 9/Nine West ($150). But for heavy walking days, invest in a good pair of walking sandals like this low wedge by Indigo by Clarks (Endless $79.95).
A versatile scarf/belt/headband (Forever 21 $14), a belt (The Limited $19.50) and retro sunglasses (Anthropologie $28) add jolts of color. To dress up your casual looks and perfectly top your garden party attire, get a cute straw hat like this cloche ($58) from Anthropologie. Try a subtle necklace (Urban Outfitters $28) with a hint of color. A white bag with a summery weave (Target $59.99) ties it all together.
