Last year, I wrote about Dresses for the Woodward Dream Cruise. The Dream Cruise is an annual classic car cruise that takes place in Metro-Detroit. I love looking up close at all the classic treasures, some of which come from all over the world just for the Cruise. Last year, I wrote about dressing for an era or matching your favorite car. When I went to the Cruise I couldn't help but notice all the design details that reminded me of fashion. So this year, I've put together a collection of car inspired looks.
One of my favorite classic cars is the 1963 Corvette with the split rear window. I love the streamlined look, and simple sexiness of this car. It makes me think of an open back red dress, strong heels (with tire tread!) and a sleek, tough clutch.
I often compare cars to shoes--the design, construction, the beauty and the fact that many men would probably buy just as many cars as women buy shoes if they only cost $80 and went on clearance for $21.95. (I would probably buy as many cars as I buy shoes too actually.)
When I look at the 1965 Jaguar E Type I can't help thinking this is what the Jetson's would have driven had they won the lottery. The retro idea of the future makes me believe we'll be spinning into space in a flying car any day now.
I love vintage-inspired dresses. Unlike real vintage, they aren't too delicate to wear all the time. They come in my size. I don't have to worry about that horrible, old polyester fabric or difficult to wash fine fabrics. And so on. This 30s-style classic car isn't actually from the 1930s. It's a 2010 Bufori La JOYA. You get a classic-looking car with all the modern benefits.
The 1967 Pontiac GTO is an iconic muscle car. It deserves a strong look with lots of power, grit and confidence. If any car is ready to rock, it's this one.
Inspiration doesn't have to come from just one car. After five hours of examining old cars, I'll have tons of details swimming through my mind. Creating a mash up these inspirations makes for some fun styling.
A friend recently brought this car to my attention. I've never seen one in real life, but if I did, you can bet I'd spend a long time staring at it. The design is white hot. And instead of chrome, this car is sporting glistening gold. A sleek look with bold gold details is the best way to capture this car in clothing.
The 1934 Ford may be edging out the 1963 Vette for the title of "my favorite classic car." This car is film noir on wheels. The one pictured here is a custom car with a lowered roof for a sinister look. I love the "coat tails" in the back and the sleek grill in front. Add the swooping fenders and it had me at "vroom." Of course, one must dress the part of a femme fatale to drive this dame.
